Homework Helper and Orange Shirt Day at OLR

Dear OLR Families:

Please note the following updates:

1) The YCDSB Continuing Education Dept. is promoting the Homework Helper program virtually to all grade 7 and 8 students across the YCDSB system. Homework Helper is a gap closing measure, meant to support student success. This free tutoring service allows students to access a teacher virtually on Saturdays, from 11:00 am-1:30 pm and support them in the development of their literacy and numeracy skills across all areas of the curriculum. In addition, students can get help with any homework, assignments or test preparation. Please consider taking advantage of this free service for your child(ren) who are currently in the Intermediate grades.

2) Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

  • What is Orange Shirt Day?

  • In the spring of 2013, a commemoration event was held in Williams Lake, BC to honour those who attended the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school. Orange Shirt Day was inspired by the experience and story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad whose shiny new orange shirt was taken away on her first day of school at the Mission. Her story and Orange Shirt Day has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

  • OLR asks that every student wears an Orange coloured shirt or orange coloured attire on Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30, 2020 to remember the many hardships experienced by survivors of the Residential School System and to offer our support to the FNMI communities across Canada.
