On Tuesday, March 26th, Mr. Martino and Ms. Skenderis, together with their Grade 6 and 7 students and parent volunteers from Our Lady of the Rosary CES embarked on a profound journey of learning and remembrance during their visit to the Toronto Holocaust Museum. Immersed in exhibits detailing the harrowing events of the Holocaust, our students gained invaluable insights into the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of standing against injustice. Through interactive displays, they explored themes of empathy, tolerance, and the enduring power of hope. This poignant experience not only deepened their understanding of history but also inspired a commitment to fostering a more compassionate world. We are immensely proud of our students for engaging thoughtfully with this essential chapter of human history.
One particular item of note is the image of a torah scroll, which was rescued by a Catholic Priest from the remains of a destroyed synagogue in 1938. The Priest kept it safe, as he knew it was an important document. In late 1944, he gave it to a rabbi for safe keeping. This rabbi went on to practice his faith in Canada later on in his career.
